Favourite spots & landscapes ( MESSINIA, Southern Pelopponese, GREECE) - A story of turtle watching, nature trails to the waterfall and village life

During my many visits and quite a few longs stays in Greece in the last 16 years, there are some images that bring back so many special sensations.

These photos of rural inland Greek Peloponnese transport me back to that moment in time.

In my husband´s paternal home village of Dorio in Messinia
near Kalamata, Southern Greece. A sleepy village, road town
in a lovely fertile valley surrounded by mountains. It has amazing clear skies
in summer, with great walks and biking. 15 mins away you can watch the Karetta
turtle lay their eggs, a or watch the young leave the nests (protected beach at  Kalo Nero
, Kiparisia). A really wild coastline (Western Peloponnese) with a 10 kms stretch where the
Karetta turtles visit every year between May and Sept. Luckily there is an NGO giving a handat
protectingthe nests from wild foxes, dogs, curious tourists. You can join a free beach  night tour.
It is amazing to think that the female turtles will only come back to their birthground   30 years
after hatching out of the egg. They remember where home is, but it takes them 30 years to return, once they turn to fertile age.  NATURE IS ASTOUNDING, AND DESERVES ALL MY RESPECTS.

This is so Mediterranean... love the original stone wall

Sunday lunch, roast pork GOUROUNOPOULA & xoriatiki Village salad with feta,
local taverna grill at the Kopanaki Sunday market

Enjoying a break at the taverna, Kopanaki Sunday market

Old Arxontiko village house, Soulema, Dorio, Messinia

Waterfall near the village of Platania, Kalamata province ( a 20 minute treck from the parking lot, you enter a canyon, safe and easy path leads you to the waterfall). A beautiful spot.

Waterfall near Platania, Dorion, Messinia (Kalamata)  -
brave swimmers in very chilly water in May.. but what amazing energy

My tarzan fantasy revisited.

Pure fresh spring water at a vilage fountain near Platania, Soulema, Peloponnese

The valle of Dorion and Kopanaki, with Aetos and Psarri (all villages at the foothills, in a semicircle facing the western Messinian coast). Quaint Greek country life. I love it there.
